Five Hundred Wagons Stood Still

Five Hundred Wagons Stood StillThis paperback book is a compilation of the lives of 150 wives of the men who served in the Mormon Battalion during the Mexican War conflict as shown in journals and histories from the respective families. The Stories usually begin at the time of birth of the wives and ends at the time of their death. It lists the burial places of most of the women and their husbands. Also, their children are listed.

The stories follow the hardships and trials encountered by the families as they were driven from state to state until they finally reached Iowa and the men were enlisted into the Mormon Battalion. Some of the stories reveal how the women survived on the prairies while their husbands were away.

The book also gives an account of the Mormon Battalion after they were mustered out of  service  in July of 1847, and the various ways in which they traveled to locate their families. Some of the wives and other family members had died while the men were away. A few of the men were fortunate enough to meet their wives in the Salt Lake Valley. However, most of the wives were waiting for their husbands to return to them in Iowa, Nebraska or Missouri. Not all of the families came to the Salt Lake Valley. The stories continue on by relating the events in their lives after the Mexican War.

It has taken several years of research and histories from many sources to bring about the stories in this book.

About the Author

Shirley Nelson Maynes was born in Murray, Utah and has lived her entire life in Sandy, Utah. She has attended both the University of Utah and Brigham Young University and has studied many Utah and Church history classes.

For the last nine years she has served as National Auxiliary President of the U. S. Mormon Battalion, Inc. When she found that very little had been written about the women of the Mormon Battalion soldiers, she was determined to search out and find the needed information in order to give these women the honor and identity that they so deserve to receive.

She and Carl Larson co-authored a book entitled "Women of the Mormon Battalion".  It is now in it's third printing. Married to Gaylen Despain Maynes, they are the parents to three sons and seven grandchildren. Shirley passed away December 28, 2009.
