Mission Statement
To research, authenticate, and preserve the history of the men of
the Mormon Battalion, their wives, children, and family members who,
during the Mexican War, made the long march with them. Their
stories are available in the book Families with
the Mormon Battalion March of 1846-48. We also honor the wives of
the men who remained behind while their husbands served in
the Mexican War of 1846-48. The stories of those left behind are
available in the book Five Hundred Wagons Stood
Still.
Our goals are:
- Compile a library of information regarding the Mormon Battalion
families
and make it available to family historians and others who are
interested in the stories of their sacrifices, trials, and hardships they made
as well as their accomplishments in colonizing the Western part of the United
States.
- Publish this researched information in a book telling about the men
and families who were involved in the Mexican War of 1846-48.
We hope
this compiled information will be valuable in teaching their descendants
and others that because of their efforts they have a great heritage.
- Memorialize the graves of the original Mormon Battalion men,
their wives who were left behind on the prairies of Iowa, as well as
the women and families who accompanied them. We honor them by
placing a beautiful bronze plaque by their headstone in special services
with the present-day Mormon Battalion Association and family members participating.
- To make available to the general public all preserved and researched materials
by placing this information in public libraries, historical
museums, and visitor centers. Also, to give this research to The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints Family History Library System and to all others who
may be interested.
- To fulfill President Brigham Young's promise when he said: "As
the Lord lives, you will never be forgotten, but will be held in
honorable remembrance forever and ever."
